About Nutri-Cal - The Calcium Solution

Nutri-Cal^® is the Number 1 organically complexed liquid calcium supplement and plant nutrient product sold today. It is made by C.S.I. Chemical Corporation of Bondurant, Iowa, a family owned and operated fertilizer manufacturing company that first opened its doors in 1955.

C.S.I. originally manufactured liquid fertilizers for grain farmers and other retail dealers throughout the mid-west. Then we diversified and entered the fruit, vegetable and turf markets throughout the United States and now serve clients all over the globe.

We first began developing a liquid calcium supplement for Iowa’s corn and soybean market in 1973. At the time the soils tested high in calcium, but the pH was low in many area soils. Because a lot of nitrogen was used, it created high hydrogen levels in the soil. We sold agricultural lime to help correct this, but found that it took several years to break down. Soil tests revealed the need for more lime (calcium) and yet the yields were not increasing. We set out to find an alternative that would both release and keep available the calcium that was already in the soils.

In fact, during testing we found that there were thousands of pounds of calcium in the soil but it was not available for the exchange with hydrogen on the soil colloid or for uptake by the plant. We soon discovered a unique organic acid complexing agent that not only had a great affinity for calcium, but could actually break down the insoluble calcium bonds in the soil and solve calcium deficiency problems in plants. It was our Eureka moment. By freeing the calcium ion, it could be utilized by the exchange column and replace the hydrogen ion or be immediately absorbed by the roots into the plant. This discovery changed many industry and university people's ideas about liming and introduced the idea of utilizing the plant nutrients we already have in the soil.

We continued our research in this area and uncovered the fact that many fruits and vegetables have calcium deficiency problems and that there are many physiological disorders associated with this. Committed to solving this all-too-common problem, we began a five-year research project to develop a more efficient, effective and safer product than what was on the market.
